When I visited Covenant Presbyterian Church two months ago (see My Visit to Covenant Presbyterian Church) it was clear the congregation had been in decline for some time. There was, however, no mention during the service, on the church’s website, or in the printed marketing materials in the sanctuary to suggest it would soon be no more.

Earlier this month I was shocked to learn this 70 year old Presbyterian (PCUSA) congregation would hold its final worship service on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

This planned closure was later delayed by one week due to the high likelihood of severe winter weather.

So What?
Apart from the basic information that a final service will be held on the church’s website and its Facebook account no further information is publicly available.
I trust that my readers are well aware that the ongoing decline in Mainline Protestant congregations means that more and more churches are closing or will soon face closure. In 2021, the first church I served after graduating from seminary closed after 158 years (see Central Christian Church: Concluding 158 Years).
With this post, I pause to give thanks for the mission and ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church and to mourn its closure.
What Next?
For those seeking a Presbyterian (PCUSA) congregation in or near this area, several options remain

I have visited two of these congregations:
