16th Annual Top 10 Books of the Year (#2282)

2025/12/17 By Greg

Welcome to the 16th annual So What Faith’s Top 10 Books of the Year. This year I read 84 books published in 2024.

The top ten are listed below in alphabetical order by author’s last name:

Top Ten

  • Ryan P. Burge. The American Religious Landscape: Facts, Trends, and the Future.
  • Diana Butler Bass. A Beautiful Year: 52 Meditations on Faith, Wisdom, and Perseverance.
  • Brené Brown. Strong Ground: The Lessons of Daring Leadership, the Tenacity of Paradox, and the Wisdom of the Human Spirit.
  • Sister Monica Clare. A Change of Habit: Leaving Behind My Husband, Career, and Everything I Owned to Become a Nun.
  • Dan Heath. Reset: How to Change What’s Not Working.
  • Elaine Pagels. Miracles and Wonders: The Historical Mystery of Jesus.
  • Hanna Reichel. For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional.
  • Christian Smith. Why Religion Went Obsolete: The Demise of Traditional Faith in America.
  • Katherine Stewart. Money, Lies and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy.
  • Isaac Samuel Villegas. Migrant God: A Christian Vision for Immigrant Justice.

Top Two

The two books on this year’s top ten that had the greatest impact on me are

  • Ryan P. Burge. The American Religious Landscape: Facts, Trends, and the Future.
  • Christian Smith. Why Religion Went Obsolete: The Demise of Traditional Faith in America.

Prior Lists

There are so many great books published in recent years.

Two of this year’s top authors appeared on prior lists:

  • Ryan P. Burge: 2022
  • Diana Butler Bass: 2012, 2015, 2018, 2021

Incredibly this marks Diana Butler Bass’ fifth appearance on So What Faith’s Top 10 Books of the Year. She joins Marcus Borg (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017) as the only authors to have been honored five times.
