People Are Driving Less (#0951)

2012/12/22 By Greg

In recent years America has experienced a decline in the number of miles people are driving.  More specifically, adjusted for population, following a few years of decline in the total miles driven current levels are now at roughly the same level as we were in 1995 (17 years ago).  Additionally, the data for the latest year recorded shows a decrease of nearly 9% from the peak.

So What?

As I pondered this data, I immediately thought of my own driving habits.  I drive significantly less miles now than I did at the time when the nation’s driving peaked (perhaps 40% less) and a bit less than I did back in 1995 (perhaps 10% less).  How does your experience compare to the averages?

  • Do you expect that, adjusted for population, people will drive fewer and fewer miles in the years ahead? Why or why not?
  • How might less driving impact the ministry and mission of your local congregation?
