Most people have limited experience visiting churches. Until a few years ago I was part of this group. 50+ First Time Experiences Over the last three years, I've been a first time visitor in more than 50 Christian churches in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The three reasons I've made so many visits are Relocating to Texas from Florida in 2015 - 36 churches as part of a search for a church Relocating within DFW (moving nearly 50 miles) - 13 churches as part of my Read More …

World Communion Sunday 2018 (#1758)
Last Sunday I was not able to attend a worship service as I spent the day in meetings for my primary employer. This Sunday, I was determined to attend worship and to be a part of World Communion Sunday. First Presbyterian I participated in the 11:00 a.m. service at First Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in downtown Fort Worth. While this congregation normally celebrates Communion on the first Sunday of every month, this service had a clear emphasis on World Communion from the Read More …
The Bible Doesn’t Say That (#1756)
Yesterday, I worshipped at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas. I heard the Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ preach "Everything Happens for a Reason" as part of the Cathedral's current sermon series: The Bible Doesn't Say That. The two earlier messages in this series are You've Got to Forgive and Forget Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin And, the remaining message will be "God Won't Give You More Than You Read More …
Search for a Church 2.0: Three Bonus Visits (#1751)
Our search for a new church continues. The original plan called for visits to 10 Mainline Protestant congregations relatively close to our new home. And, we did just that. I summarized those experiences in two earlier posts: First Five Visits and Five More Visits. 10 Became 13 Project planning in all areas of my personal and professional life is increasingly agile and benefits from rapid development thinking. This new search follows that sort of Read More …
We Say Yes (#1750)
I'm often discouraged by individuals, congregations, and even denominations who define themselves more by what they are against than what they are for or what they say "yes" to. Saying Yes Earlier this summer the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved the following statement as part of its consent agenda. As confessing Christians, we trust God, whom we know through Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray as others pray in other names. We are obligated to declare our Read More …
Search for a Church 2.0: Taking a Detour (#1747)
The first few months of our search for a church went according to plan. Each week we visited a new congregation until we had visited all 10 that were on our short list of prospects (check out First Five Visits and Five More Visits). Next Steps After these ten experiences, we narrowed the possibilities down to three congregations. Our plan was to visit each of these again multiple times, and to begin to connect in ways beyond worship in each of these communities of faith. Read More …
Search for a Church 2.0: Five More Visits (#1740)
In April my wife and I started our latest search for a church. We chose 10 congregations within 6 miles of our home, and committed to attending at least one worship service with each. In May I shared our experiences visiting the first five churches on our list. Now, I'm delighted to share our experiences with the final five visits. Visuals The first grouping of images in this post showcases #ViewFromThePew photos taken during our Sunday morning worship experiences in Read More …
Social Justice Churches Don’t Exist (#1739)
The Riverside Church has recently embarked on a new social media project called Church Talk. The fourth episode was released yesterday, and focuses on social justice. "Social justice isn't something churches do; it is something that they are." Social Justice Challenge The quote above is one of many challenging statements made by the Rev. Kevin Wright, Executive Minister of Programs at Riverside Church in the five-minute video on social justice. Wright also reminds us that "Jesus was Read More …
My Top 5 Tweets of 2018 (Jan. – May) (#1736)
Five months into the year, I decided to spend some time reviewing analytics for my Twitter account (@SoWhatFaith). According to Twitter's analytics my top five tweets so far this year appear below in chronological order.* Jan. 24 - Delighted to meet so many people doing such good work #Adese #SocialEnterprise #Boston Feb. 17 - When I contemplate the meaning of Jesus, I come back again and again to his image as the ultimate boundary-breaker, in whom what it means to Read More …
Pentecost – The Power of Love (#1735)
Today is Pentecost Sunday. I've spent my life in Mainline Protestant congregations where this is the one day each year the Spirit is set free. It is the one day when it is not only permissible, but expected to celebrate the birth of the church and the continued evolution of the church. It is a day when all are invited to be the church and to become the church. The Power of Love I had no plans to wake up early and watch the royal wedding yesterday. I imagined my only Read More …
