It’s time to look again.
Eyeball
Sometimes I don’t see things, even things that are in plain sight. This is the case when it comes to a 30 foot tall eyeball located in downtown Dallas. This piece of art was created by Tony Tasset who modeled it after his own eye. Originally displayed in Chicago, it moved to downtown Dallas in 2013.
Despite dozens of visits to downtown Dallas in recent years that took me right by or brought me close to the Eye, I had never actually seen it. Last week this changed when a friend recommended we seek it out as part of our downtown experiences.
Decorations
The lack of ability to see or to comprehend what is right before me isn’t limited to areas I traverse occasionally. Within the building where I work, I didn’t realize that there were blinds on a certain group of windows until they were included on a list of things that were beyond their useful life. Sure enough, however, when I passed by the next several times I could not not see them.
Jesus
I’ve been much more intentional about looking for Jesus than I have about searching for outdoor art or looking for non-functional indoor blinds. And, this summer, I’ve been especially focused on rediscovering Jesus as Friend, Teacher, Savior, Lord, Way, and Presence. Each week I’ve re-read a chapter of Diana Butler Bass’ book, Freeing Jesus: Rediscovering Jesus as Friend, Teacher, Savior, Lord, Way and Presence then engaged in discussion with a small group from my church (Cathedral of Hope UCC).
Somehow we’ve reached the end of this learning journey. This week we will get together for one final time to ponder how these sessions have helped us each to see Jesus more clearly and to purpose to live in ways that honor these newfound understandings. (If you’d like to engage in a similar small group study, you are welcome to utilize the small group materials I’ve created provided you provide attribution.)
So What?
Make this a week of looking again.
- Look around your home and/or your work place.
- Look around your church or another sacred space.
- Look for Jesus.
When you look again expect to see something new. And, when you see something new open yourself to responding in faith.
