Blogging in the Time of the COVID-19 Pandemic (#1869)

After blogging for 10+ years and publishing nearly 1,900 posts here at So What Faith, writing content about matters of faith that matter has become part of my identity.

COVID-19

COVID-19 has disrupted all areas of life, and impacted how people experience community, including communities of faith. In recognition of this, I shifted from wide ranging content to focus on a series of posts about differing aspects of what is happening in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic alongside a continuation of a once monthly post about the best new books I’ve read recently.

This past week I found myself thinking more deeply about the impact of COVID-19 on the church, especially during my virtual participation in the Festival of Homiletics (#Homiletics2020) and a while listening to conversation about what will happen to our churches as they do justice (part of a larger series involving Diana Butler Bass, Traci Blackmon, Brian McLaren and Cameron Trimble). Neither of these events motivated me to blog, but both inspired me to extensive live tweeting.

So What?

Going to church online, or, more accurately, participating in corporate worship exclusively online is new for me. Going to a preaching conference that has always been an in person experience exclusively online is new for me. Helping congregations shape ministry online that had never been carried out that way before has become more urgent than seemed possible just a few months ago.

During this season when more who follow the Way of Jesus are spending more of their time online, I’m excited to continue creating new content. And, I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation about things I’ve written in the past that are as if not more relevant today than when I first shared them.
