Bright, beautiful, multi-colored doors dispalying the message “God’s doors are open to all” greeted me as I entered Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ’s sanctuary this morning.
Open Doors
I was delighted to attend worship at Cathedral of Hope this morning for the congregation’s anniversary service. From a group of twelve people gathering in a home 49 years ago, the Cathedral of Hope has grown to become one of the largest congregations in the United Church of Christ. Throughout its rich history, this vibrant, inclusive, progressive congregation has consistently and lovingly proclaimed and practiced the words printed on the rainbow colored doors. Additionally, it has long been considered the largest predominantly LGBTQ Christian congregation in the world.
So What?
I’ve been a member of Cathedral of Hope for about two and a half years. Previously, I was privileged to serve two open and affirming congregations in the United Church of Christ in Florida: Naples United Church of Christ and Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ.
When seeking a new church after relocating in 2018, I became all too aware of how many congregations do not offer a welcome that matches the message on the Cathedral of Hope’s display of doors.
- Does your congregation practice such a welcome?
- If so, how would a prospective newcomer know?
