After serving in congregational ministry for most of my life, I’m still learning what its like to journey through Holy Week as a follower of the Way of Jesus who does not have any worship leadership responsibilities.
Holy Week Schedule
I have, however, managed to attend multiple services of worship and participate in an adult egg hunt. More specifically:
- Sunday: walked to a nearby church, and attended a service that included elements of both palm and passion
- Tuesday: participated in the annual staff Easter egg hunt at the Mansfield Mission Center (yes, it is a real thing that begins with a Bible story and ends with all eggs being found)
- Wednesday: took cover at home along with nearly everyone else in the greater Dallas – Fort Worth metro area due to projections of very severe weather (most area school districts canceled after school activities and most congregations canceled evening services and classes)
- Thursday: attended an evening Maundy Thursday service
- Friday: attended a Tenebrae service
So What?
There is no “right” way to experience Holy Week.
This year I found that being intentional about participating in worship services in a single congregation (I’m currently searching for a church so generally lack that continuity and connectivity) was a powerful centering experience. Worship combined with time I set aside for reading, reflection, and prayer provided me with a new appreciation of the journey.
I wonder what Holy Week has been like for you. Share your story of Holy Week 2019. What stands out? Are there any components that you feel are essential to a “normal” for you experience of Holy Week?
