Today, I concluded four months of service as visiting minister at West Fork Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Unique Experience
This opportunity was unique for me in several ways, including
- starting as a surprise
- first role that was neither permanent nor interim
- shortest duration in a parish based role
- smallest congregation I’ve served
- first congregation I’ve served that is located in an industrial district
- first time to preach 15 Sundays in a row in the same congregation
Additionally, the historical nature of this faith community is noteworthy. WFPC was established in 1870 (this makes it the second oldest congregation I’ve served).
So What?
I’m a spiritual entrepreneur. Ministry in the context of congregations has been and will continue to be a part of my work. I do not, however, expect it to be my primary endeavor any time in the near term future.
My previous parish based ministry experiences have all been in congregations that are larger than average with many being in congregations that were among the largest affiliated with their denomination in that area. My WFPC experience provided me considerable new insight into the challenges and opportunities specific to smaller congregations.
I’ll take some time to reflect, give thanks, and continue learning. I will be visiting several D/FW congregations this spring and summer. While the visits already on my schedule are to larger congregations, I will be intentional about including some smaller congregations.
- Share an experience of a congregation different from the one(s) you know best (different in size, worship style, theology, etc.).
- How long does it take you to feel like you are connected and a vital part of the life of a community of faith? What have you found helps accelerate and/or solidify this bond?
