Philip Chryst led a WikiWorship service each Sunday during Lent this year in a local bar. Each week Chrsyt would invite would be participants to submit their questions on religion, ethics, life or God using the mission’s website. He then selected one of these topics for the weekly worship gathering, which was highly participatory in nature. After introducing the topic and providing a preliminary personal answer, Chrsyt carried a microphone around to any of the worshippers who wished to contribute their perspective.
So What?
While the term wiki usually means a website that allows for collaborative editing (think Wikipedia), it is used here for an offline experience in which those gathered for worship collaborate around a topic instead of listening to a sermon/message delivered by a single person. It also means that lay people and clergy rather than clergy alone help construct the conversation.
- Would you be interested in participating in a WikiWorship service? Why or why not?
- Share the most participatory sermon you ever experienced.
