Tim van der Vliet is a former trader on the financial markets turned spiritual seeker. Adopting an irreverent eclectic approach to spirituality, he is now a full-time writer.
Book Basics
Spiritual Awakening (the easy way) is the sort of book one could read easily in half an hour or might opt to spend the better part of day pondering. van der Vliet proposes his own irreverent simplistic approach to spirituality in five easy steps:
- break free of our collective dream,
- detach and let go of our beliefs,
- have fun along the way,
- feel the force, and
- move towards the light.
Less a systemic approach and more a list of guiding principles, the steps frame his worldview. Whether a given page has 3 or 33 words, they are presented in a visual manner intended to spur creativity within the reader.
This book is a blend of self-help, postmodern existentialism, and religious eclecticism through the lens of one man’s reflections.
So What?
Since my readership is primarily Christian, I offer an excerpt from a piece called “Just a thought on gurus and their followers…”
Would Jesus have been a Christian?
Muhammad a Muslim?
Buddha a Buddhist?
Of course not!
The only thing they claim
is that you should follow your own aim
As far as they’re concerned
there’s no such thing
as a guru
’cause the only guru
is
you.
As you have continued on the journey of faith, how has your experience been enriched by wisdom from traditions other than your own?
