Phil Cooke is a filmmaker, author, and speaker. Additionally, he is the founder and CEO of Cooke Pictures. In light of the non-response by Christian television to the conflict in Syria, he shared his concern about the growing irrelevance of their product:
Christian television continues to grow more and more irrelevant because we refuse to take the time or trouble to address issues that really matter—when they matter. If you work at a Christian station or network, think about it. I’m all for sermons, Bible teaching, interview shows and movies. But consider the power of live, immediate programming with experts who can help us understand these world events.
So What?
When I first read Cooke’s article I started to review my own experiences. The only times in recent years that I have watched any so-called Christian television have been to better understand what is happening in that sector. The lone exception to this was a 2013 Christian series on a secular network: The Bible (amazingly watched by over 100 million people).
For me, Christian television stations have lacked compelling content for many years. In my view, rather than growing more irrelevant they have remained equally irrelevant.
Perhaps there are good stations, programs, or live events/coverage of live events I should know about, but don’t. If so, please let me know. I am certainly willing to expand my horizons.
What has your experience been with so-called Christian television in recent years?
