Seth Godin is the author of twelve books that have been bestsellers around the world and changed the way people think about marketing, change, and work. He is also the master of saying a great deal using relatively few words on his blog. Recently he wrote about the power of togetherness in learning.
Godin affirms that mere access to educational opportunities is not adequate. Completion rates from MOOCs are among the strongest recent data backing up this argument. Given this reality, Godin suggests “Learning together serves a crucial function… it makes learning happen.” In making such a remark, he is emphasizing the physical togetherness of people in a shared space.
So What?
Christian churches are in the disciple making business. Discipleship necessarily requires learning, and traditionally includes components that occur in community (together with others).
- What percentage of your congregation’s learning opportunities leverage the power of “learning together” by gathering class/team/group members together for some of the learning activities?
- Is togetherness in learning substantively different in online learning when compared to on campus/face-to-face? Explain.
