Most Christians know and seek to live by the so-called “golden rule,” which calls for a life of treating others as one would like to be treated. Interestingly, an ethic of reciprocity is also found in many of the world’s religions and cultures.
The Rev. Dr. Jim Antal, Conference Minister and President of the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ, recently challenged participants at the UCC’s National Youth Event to live by something he calls the Golden Rule 2.0: “Treat future generations as you would want them to treat you.”
So What?
The Golden Rule calls for focus on living well in the present within the context of all of your interactions with others. The Golden Rule version 2.0 is a natural extension of this to those who will come later whether or not you may ever know that generation or any member of it.
- Do you agree/disagree with the premise that version 2.0 is a natural extension of the original? Explain
- As a follower of Jesus how do both versions inform and transform your identity and actions?
