Can Christianity Be Saved? (#0793)

2012/07/17 By Greg

As I read Ross Douthat’s latest New York Times editorial, “Can Liberal Christianity Be Saved?,” I knew I had to respond.  In short, he suggests that the end could well be near for progressive or liberal Christianity unless something changes rather significantly as a result of decades of decline.  While not proposing that other forms of Christianity have all fared well, he suggests that they have by way of comparison to progressive denominations. (For more on Douthat’s perspective, read my review of his new book: Bad Religion.)

A few hours later while I was still pondering what to include in a blog post, I read a response that effectively addresses the larger story left untold in his piece.  Diana Butler Bass’ article places Douthat’s argument in its proper context then replaces his attempt to place liberal Christianity on its deathbed with a more suitable and hopeful question about the implication of larger trends in American Christianity (ones that reach everyone and do not discriminate on the basis of theological labels like conservative or liberal).  (For more on Bass’ perspective, read my review of her new book: Christianity After Religion.)

So What?

Mainline decline is featured on this blog more than any other topic.  I write about it as an insider.  While I prefer to label myself postdenominational, I have served congregations associated with four mainline denominations: Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Lutheran (ELCA), Presbyterian (PCUSA), and United Church of Christ.  Through a combination of personal experience and extensive study, I know what has been happening.

Douthat writes as an outsider.  While he prefers to label himself as objective, I question such as I read and re-read the article he wrote this past Sunday.  I do not know his intentions, but do know from his other recent writing that he personally views progressive forms of Christianity as unhealthy because they do not adhere to the form of orthodoxy he understands is essential.
