Facebook Changed Your E-mail Address (#0772)

2012/06/26 By Greg

I was not as engaged in social media yesterday as I am most days, but noted one recurring theme: Facebook changed everyone’s e-mail address.  If you don’t already know, be advised that your new e-mail address appearing on your timeline is an @facebook.com account. If you would like to restore your prior account simply

  1. Go to your profile page
  2. Click on About
  3. Click on Edit in Contact Info
  4. Click on the menu beside each e-mail address listed and choose your desired setting

So What?
I can’t remember the last time I went to someone’s Facebook page in order to find an e-mail address so that I could be in touch via e-mail.  While this sudden change will likely not have a significant effect on most users, the nature of the change may.  Facebook has made universal changes before and likely will in the future.  When such changes come as a surprise, it leaves the end user wondering what else Facebook may be doing or planning to do that will alter the user’s experience.

  • What change or changes on social networking sites in recent years have troubled you the most? Why?
  • When is the last time you searched for someone’s e-mail address via Facebook?
  • Do you default to communicating with people within the current environment (e.g., using Facebook if in Facebook)? Why or why not?
