Since I lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area for many years, I am no stranger to the strangeness of megachurch pastor Ed Young. Earlier this year, I even mentioned his one-of-a-kind “bed-in” here on sowhatfaith.com. Given what I know of him, I am convinced Young is the ideal poster boy for the “bigger is better” and/or “flashier is more fun” model of church. Given such, perhaps one of his latest ventures will equip a new generation of pastors to be more fashion forward.
Pastorfashion.com launched in February. The site already includes numerous videos filled with topic specific fashion counsel from Young.
- He appears alone to discuss shirt collars. In one such segment he explains how to ensure one’s collar doesn’t fly away; in another piece he advises how to determine the type of collar that fits your face.
- He appears with others to discuss diverse fashion know how, including “Tips to Take Your Style to a HNL” and “Skinny Jeans and Testosterone.”
So What?
While I am all for pastors and others in ministry dressing well, I cannot think of a single person I want to refer to Young’s new site for counsel. I am also not convinced that there is a need for a pastor specific fashion advice website.
- Does what defines good fashion sense somehow change when one becomes ordained?
- Where do you turn when you want to learn more about fashion?
- Describe your pastor’s overall sense of fashion (within the context of your ministry and community – not comparing her or him to Young). If you felt your minister’s dress was detracting from credible ministry, how would you approach him/her?
