The Day My Blog Didn’t Appear on Facebook (#0555)

2011/11/22 By Greg

Social media is designed to be social.  With so many users leveraging multiple channels, many tools exist to make it easier to share information across channels.  While I no longer use Facebook as much as I once did, I have continued to import my blog posts as notes.  A few days ago, I received the following message when I logged on to Facebook:

Changes to How You Share Content in Notes
You currently automatically import content from your website or blog into your Facebook notes.  Starting November 22, this feature will no longer be available . . .

So What?
Facebook is always changing, but its latest significant “upgrade” has raised many questions.  I wrote about those shifts last month in a post titled “Is the New Facebook too Complicated?”  While I do think the current interface offers too much functionality for most users, I appreciated the opportunity to not only be aware of but voluntarily transition to the new environment before all users were moved to it.  In contrast to that well publicized overhaul, this change came with no warning and no acceptable solution.  Facebook simply proposes that, starting today, the best way for us to share blog content is to manually ad a link to each post on our timeline.

  • I will not be manually creating a note for each blog post.  Would you prefer that I (and other bloggers who had used that functionality) simply do as Facebook suggests and post a link to the new content every time we blog?  Why or why not?
  • Do you use Facebook more, less or about the same as you did a year ago? Do you expect your usage will increase, decrease or remain consistent in the year ahead?
  • What changes has Facebook made that you dislike?  How have these impacted your usage?
