Claire Diaz Ortiz – leader of social innovation, philanthropy, and causes for Twitter – attended Catalyst’s recent Be Present conference to network with the speakers and many of the 13,000 attendees. This appeal is a part of a larger effort by Twitter to reach out to religious leaders.
So What?
In her article on this story, Sarah Pulliam Bailey quoted Diaz Ortiz:
It’s about relationships and social media is about relationships. A lot of companies don’t understand that. They think it’s a new way to market themselves . . . In contrast, religious organizations have been relying on word-of-mouth marketing and relational marketing for forever, so they take to social media well.
Pulliam Bailey also noted that Twitter’s intentional outreach to religious leaders comes at a time when notable companies, including Google and Apple, have taken actions that limit rather than expand their involvement with religious non-profit organizations.
- Do you agree or disagree with Diaz Ortiz’ assertion that religious organizations, including Protestant congregations, are especially well suited to effectively utilize social media? Why? How well would you grade this group in realizing this potential?
- Compared to all content on your Twitter stream, are you more or less likely to retweet religious content?
