Learning the Unwritten Rules of Social Media (#0440)

2011/07/30 By Greg

Rajesh Setty, author of Upbeat: Cultivating the Right Attitude in Tough Times (2009) and President of Foresight Plus, recently shared his list of the unwritten rules of social media:

  1. Connection does not imply permission
  2. Access does not imply entitlement
  3. Activity is not productivity
  4. More is not better
  5. Reciprocation is optional
  6. Amplification without accomplishment is futile
  7. Engagement without enrichment is not effective

So What?

Most who enter the world of social media do so with little or no formal training.  Many learn about the unwritten rules only by breaking them.  Setty’s seven statements are succinct and substantive.

  • What unwritten rules do you wish someone had shared with you when you were initially finding your way in social media?   Share a few examples of how you stumbled as you tried to find your way.
  • Which of Setty’s seven unwritten rules do you see violated most often?  Are there any you struggle to keep?
