Josh Henry, Managing Partner with The Church Business Guys, recently shared his list of basic do’s and don’ts for church websites:
- Don’t overcomplicate your domain name . . .
- Use caution when hiring a relative, close friend, high school student or church member who says they can do it . . .
- Use free tools sparingly . . .
- Consider the website an investment . . .
- Utilize your website as a ministry of your church . . . Take advantage of the communication opportunity. Link your site to Social Media and utilize it for your church.
- Create a Web Destination . . . A website is boring, bland, static, and virtually useless unless handled perfectly. Why not create a web destination where people can get engaged and connected with your church.
So What?
Most people today will visit a church’s website before visiting its campus to attend a worship service, educational program, or other activity. First impressions in the virtual world matter.
- How well does your congregation’s website reflect who you really are as a body of believers? its content? its style and layout?
- How well does your congregation’s website do on each of the six items on Henry’s list?
- What strategic vision or general guidance is provided to the person or group responsible for creating and maintaining your congregation’s website? Has this been revisited in the last year?
