For the last few years, I have been studying the life and ministry of Jesus in an attempt to more fully answer the question: “Who is Jesus?” A few months ago I wrote series of posts sharing areas of emphasis in my study of Jesus over the last several years: prayers, parables, priorities, and creed. Recently, I read a blog that has led me to ponder the possibility of spending some time focusing on preaching. That blog, “A Year With the Sermon on the Mount,” encourages participants to make several commitments including:
- Commit to reading the sermon aloud once each week
- Commit to memorizing the complete sermon
- Commit to identifying a “guiding principle” that will be a focus during a given month
- Commit to reading through a book list, in a specific order, throughout the year
- Commit to writing one reflection a week about your discoveries, experience, etc.
So What?
What commitments have you made that will help you grow in your faith in 2011?
Have you ever invested a significant amount of time to try to more fully answer the question “Who is Jesus?”
- If so, how did that experience change your understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus?
- If not, could “A Year With the Sermon on the Mount” serve as a helpful starting point?
