Over the last several years the question has shifted from whether or not specific groups use the internet to how they do. Recent research done by the Pew Research Center provides incredible insight into the generational differences in online behavior. The research is based on data from telephone interviews with 2,252 adults conducted between April 29 and May 30, 2010. The following chart provides a visual summary:
So What?
Consider yourself. How well does your online activity match that of your generational cohort?
Consider your ministry. If you serve in an age specific ministry (i.e. college ministry or mature adult ministry), how well does your use of online options reach your intended generational audience? What growing edges does this graphic suggest and how can you work on them in 2011?
Consider your congregation. If you have a multi-generational parish, how well do you reach out to each generation in ways that resonate with their online habits? What growing edges does this graphic illuminate and how can you focus on them in 2011?
