Managing the Social Network Map (#0176)

2010/11/09 By Greg

Two maps offer a compelling visual case for the changing geography of social networking.   The first map was created for XKCD in 2007.  The second map  was created by Ethan Bloch, Co-Founder and CEO of Flowtown.

 So What?

Christian community has always been about helping people become and remain connected.  Most local churches tend toward the extremes of being incredibly savvy or only marginally interested in social networking.

  • On a continuum from incredibly savvy to marginally interested, where would you place your congregation? Why?
  • If you surveyed the accounts belonging to the church and various groups within the church, the pastor(s) and primary leadership team, would it look more like the 2010 map, the 2007 map, a much more outdated map, or a map dominated by only a few continents?  If you could lay this map beside a map of the active accounts of your church’s members, would they be similar or radically different?
  • How does your congregation’s communication team construct policy and provide education to equip your pastor(s), staff, and volunteer leaders with the skills to continue to navigate the ever changing social networking terrain?
