The Independent Christian Church, one of three current expressions of the Restoration Movement, has influenced my faith. I attended and received my undergraduate degree in ministry from Dallas Christian College, which is affiliated with this movement.
The Restoration Movement (Independent Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, and Churches of Christ) is comprised of those churches that seek to restore the New Testament church. Since the early church as pictured in the New Testament consisted of non-denominational congregations, the Independent Christian Church remains committed to remaining as a movement rather than developing into a denomination. It is estimated that there are currently one million members of this tradition in the United States.
So What?
The greatest contribution the Independent Christian Church has made to my faith is emphasizing the importance of the New Testament for individual believers as well as local congregations.
- What is the role of the New Testament in your faith? in the life of your congregation?
- Does your tradition include any beliefs or practices that are outside of or would be opposed to the New Testament practices or teachings?
- How might a return to the basics by emphasizing the New Testament be helpful in your life? in the life of your congregation?
